Horse Shopping in Temecula, CA
The temperature is dropping, the sun is setting earlier, and fall is steadfastly turning into winter. Horse shopping this time of year can be stressful, but it doesn’t have to be! So let’s take a trip to the heart of Southern California Wine Country, Temecula, where the sun shines, the trainers are top notch, and the horses are gorgeous. Because in my opinion, we could all use a bit more sunshine, wine, and horses. Temecula is the perfect next stop on our horse shopping list, so let’s raise a glass and cheers to some of the best trainers and barns this popular destination has to offer.
Firstly, Temecula is home to one of America’s most renowned show jumping riders, Susan Hutchinson. Since 1988 Susie has won over 80 Grand Prix coast-to-coast and overseas, including World Cup wins. Her long list of wins and trophies prove that she’s one of the best in the country, and her awards and accolades confirm her everlasting impact on the sport. A few of her achievements include 1992 Rider of the Year by The Chronicle of the Horse, Top 25 Rider Status in the U.S. in 2010 and 2011, the Harry Forbes Sportsmanship Trophy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013, and a 2015 induction into the Show Hunter Hall of Fame. Not only does Susie maintain a competitive showing schedule, but she also operates a full service horse training facility and offers a select group of talented horses for sale, making it the perfect stop on our Temecula list. Susie says that “It’s one sport where the older you get, sometimes the better you get” and we have to agree!
Next on our list is Petschenig Show Jumping, owned and operated by Peter Petschenig, and newly joined with Natalie Cooper. Peter is a World Cup rider with numerous Grand Prix wins throughout the United States, Europe, and South America. Originally from Austria, Peter established his training center with the intent of combining classical European equestrian principles with the competitive spirit of the United States. Together he and Natalie (granddaughter of USEF Hall of Fame Inductee Morton “Cappy” Smith) specialize in training horses in the hunter, jumper, and equitation disciplines, from young prospects to Grand Prix. All of their horses go through an extensive evaluation process, and if they don’t have the right horse for you, their extensive international contacts can find your perfect mount and import from overseas. Catch them at their California facility or in Pilot Point, Texas.
If you’re looking for a horse to take to the next level, try out Next Level Eventing, owned by international event riders Tamie Smith and Heather Morris. Tamie is an accomplished rider, with accolades like 2015 USEF CCI3* National Champion, and the 2015 USEA 7th Ranked Rider of year aboard the USEA Horse of the Year, Mai Baum. She is also a talented trainer and instructor, utilizing her skills and patience in her knack for developing difficult horses. Riding is always better with friends, and Heather Morris is a fierce friend to have on your side. Along with assistant riders Mackenna Shea and Kaylawana Smith, Next Level Eventing is dominating the West Coast eventing scene. When they’re not crushing the competition, they’re working to pair riders with their perfect mounts, so be sure to check out their proven sport horses offered for sale. Also check out Erin Kellerhouse’s Swift Ridge Eventing out of Galway Downs, and Hawley Bennett Eventing just outside of Temecula in Ramona CA.
If a dressage mount is what you’re looking for, your first stop should be with Niki Clarke at Dressage Unlimited. Niki began her career as an eventer but in 2004 decided to concentrate on her love for Dressage. Working under some of the best trainers in the world, Niki’s talent has been shining as she moves up the ranks of the Dressage World. The highly respected FEI rider’s career highlights include USDF Bronze, Silver, and Gold Medals, and a Centerline Scores 5* rated rider amongst her many FEI wins. Her full training barn Dressage Unlimited is focused on developing talented young horses for competition and sales, the perfect stop for GoHorse Shoppers.
Temecula is known for many things including wine and horses, but almost everything special that Temecula has to offer comes together at Galway Downs. Galway Downs is a spectacular 242 acres of beauty, exemplifying hospitality and tradition, and steeped in legacy of equestrian excellence. They host festivals, sporting events, gorgeous weddings, luxurious accommodations, and of course, their world class equestrian center. Their facility boasts 400 permanent stalls, a 1-mile racetrack, 5/8 mile training track, polo field, 14 training and competition arenas, and 15 miles of trials. They hold a number of equestrian competitions including the famous Galway Downs Internati1onal CCI3* Event. Although we just missed this years event (Next Level Eventing and Swift Ridge Eventing sure didn’t miss it!), you can still catch their Hunter/Jumper series early December. If you still need some convincing to visit Galway Downs, their Christmas on the Ranch is a must for the holiday season! Winter is coming to Southern California is the best way featuring Temecula’s largest ice rink, a Christmas Village, food and drinks, and fun for the whole family.
You simply can’t visit Southern California’s Wine Country without drinking wine! Take some time to relax and enjoy your horse shopping by visiting one of over 30 wineries nestled in Temecula’s rolling hills and sprawling valleys, where you can find your favorite Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Syrah wines. Tour wine country at your own leisurely pace, or charter a guided winery tour through shuttles and limousines for a luxurious relaxing splurge. Take a trip down the De Portola Wine Trial, or visit favorites such as Falkner Winery, Briar Rose Winery, or South Coast Winery Resort and Spa. So many options, so many wines, cheers to horse shopping!
Another must when visiting Temecula is visiting Old Town, a unique town that combines a rustic past with an up-and-coming future. Old Town Temecula has something to offer everyone, from handcrafted artisan goods, farm-to-table dining, craft breweries, live music, to farmer’s markets and outdoor festivals. You can also discover their history by taking a charming walk down the old wooden boardwalks to rustic buildings and storefronts reminiscent of historic golden west in the 1880s. Visit soon to take advantage of their Village Christmas Market, or grab a blanket and some hot chocolate and enjoy a Jingle Bell Sleigh Ride to usher in the Holiday season with cheer.
